Before going to the gym have a small snack an hour or so before. A medium-size meal is ideal two hours prior. If you eat more than that you'll probably get cramps. You need the calories as your fuel so you can perform at your best. It's not as important if it's going to be a shorter workout (like hopping on the treadmill for 30 minutes or so). But you do want to drink plenty of liquids beforehand. A sports drink is best if it's an hour or more. Otherwise, water will do just fine to keep you hydrated. Hope that helps!

You never want to work out on an empty stomach. If you have less than an hour before your workout you should just eat carbs that are easily-digestible. Whenever possible eat a full meal with carbohydrates, fat, and protein at least 3 hours before you work out.
